nbc news the fbi investigation began with a complaint from jill kelly of tampa who with her husband is a close personal friend of petraeus and his wife. kelly complained she was receiving anonymous e-mails from someone she did not know. officials tell nbc news those e-mails led to the discovery of others between general petraeus and paula broadwell that were indicative of an extramarital affair. previously broadwell spoke publicly about her access to the general. >> i was embedded with general petraeus in afghanistan and it was a little confusing for some of the folks there because i'm also a military reservist with top secret fbi clearance so a lot of my former peers didn't know how to treat me. >> reporter: the general is not under investigation. he has resigned and spoke with through his spokesperson on saturday. >> he said he had an excellent job, a great relationship with the white house. in his words, he screwed up. he knows it. >> reporter: now nbc news has confirmed petraeus conducted his own investigation on the ground in libya. congress is beginning hearings into that dead

morning. actually it's the same woman who launched the initial fbi investigation that led to the resignation of general david petraeus. she is jill kelly. apparently she has exchanged 20,000 to 30,000 e-mails, at least that many pages of e-mails with general john allen. john allen replaced general petraeus in afghanistan. now, these e-mails have been discovered and are under investigation by the inspector general at the pentagon. what was their relationship? we do not know. that question was not answered by senior defense officials. but they do say that allen denies any inappropriateness, any wrongdoing. interestingly he was already in town for a confirmation hearing that was previously scheduled for thursday. they were moving him from afghanistan to europe to oversee our forces there. that requires senate confirmation. he was here preparing for that. now according to the defense secretary who made the initial announcement early this morning about this new investigation, that confirmation is on hold. he keeps his job until they have some evidence that there was any wrong d
